Has a WR Ever Been Drafted #1 Overall in NFL History?

A Rare Move: Wide Receivers and the #1 Pick

It’s not often that a wide receiver hears his name called first on draft night. Quarterbacks? Oh, all the time. Edge rushers and left tackles? Yeah, sure. But WRs? That’s a whole different story — and it's happened... but barely.

The NFL Draft and Positional Value

Teams picking at #1 usually need a franchise-changing player, someone to build around. And traditionally, quarterbacks are the go-to. Why? Because a solid QB can change the trajectory of an entire organization. Wide receivers, no matter how electric, usually depend on the guy throwing them the ball. That's part of the reason WRs are rarely considered worthy of that top slot.

The One and Only: Irving Fryar in 1984

So has a WR ever gone #1? Yes — once. Just once.

Irving Fryar – New England Patriots, 1984

In the 1984 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots selected Irving Fryar out of Nebraska with the #1 overall pick. He was a standout talent — quick, tough, had great hands. But still, this pick shocked a few people back then.

Fryar ended up having a pretty lengthy career (he played until 2000, which is wild), making 5 Pro Bowls and racking up over 12,000 receiving yards. So... yeah, he delivered, though maybe not as dominantly as you'd expect from a first-overall pick.

Why WRs Rarely Go First Overall

They’re Not "Foundational" (According to GMs)

NFL general managers tend to view wide receivers as part of a system rather than the system itself. They’re seen more as luxury picks, not cornerstones — unless we're talking about a once-in-a-generation guy. And even then, teams hesitate.

Think about it: even Calvin Johnson, aka Megatron, arguably one of the most freakishly gifted athletes in NFL history, didn’t go #1. He was picked second in 2007.

The Risk Factor

WR success in college doesn't always translate to the NFL. Route trees, defensive looks, physicality — it’s a big jump. Teams are wary of spending that precious #1 spot on a player who might be flashy but not necessarily reliable right out of the gate.

Recent WR Draft Trends: A Shift?

There’s been a recent surge in WRs being taken earlier — like, top-10 kind of early — but still not #1.

Examples of High Drafted WRs

  • Ja'Marr Chase (2021) – Picked 5th by the Bengals

  • Julio Jones (2011) – 6th overall

  • A.J. Green (2011) – 4th overall

  • Larry Fitzgerald (2004) – 3rd overall

These guys have all made massive impacts, but again, none of them cracked that top spot. Even though their talent arguably deserved it.

Could It Happen Again?

Sure. But the stars would have to align — like, perfectly. You’d need a team with:

  • No need at QB

  • No trade-down offers they can't refuse

  • A WR prospect who's just that much better than anyone else in the class

Is Marvin Harrison Jr. that guy in 2024? Eh, maybe. Some think he’s the best WR prospect in years. But even then... odds are, a QB still goes first. Classic.

Final Thought: WRs Deserve More Love?

Honestly, it’s kinda wild that in the long, long history of the NFL Draft, only one wide receiver has been picked first overall. Just one! That says a lot about how front offices think about building a team.

But hey — who knows? With passing offenses exploding and WRs becoming more crucial than ever, maybe one day soon, we’ll see another #1 WR. It’s overdue, don’t ya think?
