How Many Apps Per Day? The Numbers Will Surprise You

Are we really using that many apps every day?

So here's the thing — I thought I used maybe 5 or 6 apps on a normal day. You know, the basics: messages, email, Instagram, maybe Spotify. But then I actually checked my phone's usage stats...
17. Seventeen different apps. In one day. And that was a chill Sunday.

This got me thinking (and mildly spiraling): How many apps do people really use per day? And how many are we installing? Deleting? Opening for 2 seconds and never touching again?

So I dug deep — numbers, stories, personal mess-ups and all.

The average number of apps used per day

Global stats (a little shocking tbh)

According to several recent reports (App Annie, SensorTower, Data.ai), the average smartphone user uses 9 to 10 apps per day, and 30 apps per month.
That includes everything: messaging, social, finance, gaming, even that random flashlight app you forgot you had.

And here's the kicker — most of us only use about a third of the apps we actually have installed.

My friend Jordan told me he had over 150 apps on his phone. I made him count. 154. He uses maybe 12 consistently. The rest? “Just in case.”

It depends on who you are

  • Teens & Gen Z? Easily 12–15 apps daily. TikTok, Snap, BeReal, games, school stuff.

  • Professionals? Often 8–10, including productivity tools like Slack, Notion, Outlook, Zoom (ugh).

  • Parents? Mostly social + utilities. My sister swears by her kid-monitoring and grocery apps.

So yeah, it varies. But most people are hopping between apps way more than they think.

How many apps do we download per day?

Worldwide downloads: the app tsunami

In 2023 alone, people downloaded over 250 billion apps across iOS and Android. That averages out to around 685 million per day globally.
Yeah. You read that right. Per. Day.

Obviously, not you downloading 1000 apps a year. But it adds up across billions of users, especially in high-growth regions like India and Brazil.

App stores are crowded… and brutal

With millions of apps out there, most get ignored. Like, painfully ignored.
I once launched a tiny productivity app with a dev friend (shoutout to Lucas). We got 300 installs. Ever. In 6 months.
The same day we launched, about 3000 other apps hit the Play Store. It’s a war zone out there.

Do we need that many apps?

Honestly? Nope. But...

We keep downloading apps for different reasons:

  • One-time needs (like that airline app you used once for check-in)

  • Curiosity (“this looks cool!” …never opens it again)

  • Recommendations (from that one friend who swears it changed their life)

But 70–80% of apps are abandoned after one use. Let that sink in.
I’m guilty — I have three habit tracker apps on my phone. I don’t use any. I just like the idea of maybe becoming the kind of person who does.

App fatigue is real

At some point, more apps = more noise. Too many notifications, updates, logins, bugs.
It’s why many of us end up “spring cleaning” our phones.
I did that last month. Deleted 42 apps in one go. Felt amazing. Then I reinstalled two of them the next day because I needed a QR scanner

How to be smarter with your daily apps

A little self-check goes a long way

If you’re feeling overwhelmed (or just curious), try this:

  • Go to your phone’s screen time settings

  • Check “apps used today”

  • Ask yourself: Do I actually need all of these?

  • Delete the dead weight. Or at least mute the ones draining your battery and soul.

You don’t need to live with 5 minimalist apps only. But being intentional helps. Big time.

Final thoughts: It’s not about how many — it’s about which

So, how many apps per day? On average? Around 9–10.
But that number’s kinda meaningless if you’re not using the right ones.

If you’ve got 100 apps that just sit there making your phone slower, that’s not helpful.
But if you’ve got 5–6 solid apps that keep you organized, inspired, and sane — that’s gold.

Maybe the real question isn’t how many apps per day, but which ones actually make your day better?

(And no, you probably don’t need that fifth weather app. Just saying.)
