Is 2K23 on PS4 Worth It? The Honest Truth Before You Buy

Gameplay: Smooth Enough or Just Recycled?

Familiar Feel, Slightly Sharper Moves

Honestly, if you’ve played 2K22 on PS4, jumping into 2K23 feels… kinda familiar. I mean, yeah, the movement's a bit tighter, and the shot timing is slightly more responsive, but it’s not a night-and-day difference. Sometimes I forgot I wasn’t just playing 22 again.

They added a new adrenaline boost system (those little bars under your stamina), and at first I hated it. Felt like I couldn't dribble for more than 3 seconds. But then my friend Marcus explained how it forces smarter play—and okay, fair point. Once I adjusted, it actually made iso plays more strategic.

Still, if you're expecting a full-on reinvention? Nah, not here. But the tweaks are solid.

Defense Finally Matters (Kinda)

One thing I do like is that defense finally gets rewarded more. Steals, blocks, good positioning—they matter. Not just guessing and spamming buttons anymore. That’s a win.

Graphics and Performance: PS4 Still Holding Up?

Visuals: Decent... But Showing Its Age

Let’s be real. On PS4, 2K23 looks good, but it doesn’t pop like it does on PS5. Player models are decent, crowds look okay, but you’ll notice some janky animations and longer loading screens. There was this one time I was stuck on a loading screen so long, I thought my console had crashed—turned out it was just slow. Annoying.

Smoothness and Frame Rate

Framerate holds up most of the time. I did get some occasional stuttering during MyCareer cutscenes though. Not game-breaking, but yeah, noticeable.

MyCareer and Game Modes: Still Addictive or Just Grind?

MyCareer: Same Loop, Slight Twist

I won’t lie—MyCareer’s storyline this year? Kinda cringe. You play this guy called “MP” and there’s this whole forced rivalry with a guy named Shep Owens. Honestly, I just skipped most cutscenes after a while.

That said, the city (or the neighborhood, rather, since PS4 doesn’t get the full city) is still fun to explore. I spent way too long messing around with side quests.

Also... the grind is real. Unless you're dropping VC (virtual currency) like crazy, leveling your player takes forever. There was a point where I lost three straight Rec games just 'cause I couldn't afford decent shooting attributes. Frustrating as hell.

MyTeam & Other Modes

If you're into MyTeam, it’s still a money pit. Fun? Sure. But it’ll tempt your wallet real quick. I actually had to uninstall the app at one point just to stop myself from buying packs late at night. (Don’t judge me.)

Price vs Value: Is It Still Worth Buying on PS4?

Full Price, Half the Features?

Here’s the thing that bugged me: you’re paying nearly the same price as PS5 users, but you're not getting the full experience. No “City” in MyCareer, limited graphical upgrades, and some gameplay features are toned down or just missing.

That said... if you don’t have a PS5 yet, and you still love the 2K loop, it’s not a terrible buy. Especially if you skipped 2K22.

I talked to my cousin Chris last week—he's still on PS4, bought 2K23, and he’s loving it. But he also didn’t play 2K22, so everything feels new to him. Different story if you're upgrading from last year.

Final Thoughts: Should You Get It?

So. Is 2K23 on PS4 worth it? Well... yeah if you're a die-hard 2K fan still stuck on PS4 and didn’t touch 2K22. But if you’re hoping for something revolutionary or fresh? Lower those expectations.

I kinda regret buying it at launch. Should’ve waited for a sale. But then again, I’m still playing it. Still yelling at my screen when I miss wide-open corner threes. Still grinding badges at 1am when I should be sleeping. So maybe that says something.

If you do get it, just go in with your eyes open. It’s not perfect. But it’s still 2K—and if you know what that means, you’ll probably find a way to enjoy it anyway.
