Can Salt Water Help Tooth Infection? Here's the Real Deal

Can Salt Water Help Tooth Infection? Here's the Real Deal

That moment your tooth starts throbbing…

You know the one. That annoying, pulsing pain deep in your jaw that slowly creeps into your head and makes everything else feel worse. Yeah — I’ve been there. Last winter, I had this stubborn ache in my molar, and of course, it was a Sunday night. No dentist in sight. So I did what most of us do: Googled the heck out of it.

One suggestion kept popping up everywhere: salt water rinse. But does it actually help? Can salt water really do anything against a tooth infection, or is it just an old wives' tale?

Let’s talk about it. Like, really talk about it.

What salt water can actually do for your mouth

It’s not magic, but it’s not useless either

Honestly? Salt water is not a cure for a tooth infection. If you’ve got something deep — like an abscess or infected root — no amount of salty swishing will fix it. But (and this is important), salt water can absolutely help manage symptoms while you wait for proper treatment.

Here’s what it does do:

  • Helps reduce swelling

  • Pulls out some bacteria from inflamed gums or wounds

  • Soothes irritation in your mouth

  • Cleanses minor debris from around the infected area

My dentist — Dr. Hall, who’s seen it all — told me, “Salt water is great as a first response, but if your cheek’s swollen like a balloon, you need antibiotics. Period.”

The science-y bit (just a quick one, promise)

Salt creates a hypertonic solution — basically, it draws water out of cells. When you rinse, it can pull fluid from inflamed gum tissue and temporarily reduce puffiness. That also makes it harder for bacteria to thrive in that spot.

It’s not exactly rocket science, but hey, it works... to an extent.

How to use salt water the right way

Don’t just dump salt into a glass

Yeah, there’s actually a “proper” way to do this. When I first tried it, I overdid it and ended up burning my mouth a little (rookie mistake). Here’s the better approach:

  1. Boil water first — to make it sterile

  2. Let it cool to warm — NOT hot (you’re not making soup)

  3. Add ½ to 1 teaspoon of salt per cup of water

  4. Stir until dissolved

  5. Swish around your mouth for 30 seconds, then spit (don’t swallow it, obviously)

You can do this 2–3 times a day when you're in pain. Just don’t overdo it — too much can dry out your mouth or irritate your gums more.

What kind of salt should you use?

Plain old table salt is fine. You don’t need fancy pink Himalayan salt or sea salt harvested by monks in Iceland. (Although, if that makes you feel better emotionally, go for it.)

But can it cure the infection?

Short answer: nope

I hate to break it to you, but no, salt water cannot cure a tooth infection. If there’s bacteria inside your tooth — especially deep inside the root or gum — that’s beyond the reach of any home remedy.

I learned this the hard way. I spent three days rinsing and hoping the pain would go away. It didn’t. Ended up at the dentist with a swollen face and a prescription for antibiotics. Not my proudest moment.

When to stop rinsing and see a pro

If you’ve got any of these going on, don’t wait:

  • Fever or chills

  • Swelling in your cheek or jaw

  • Pus (ugh, I know, gross but serious)

  • Throbbing pain that won’t let you sleep

  • Trouble opening your mouth or swallowing

Salt water can buy you time, not replace the dentist.

Are there better home remedies out there?

Not really — and that’s okay

There are people who swear by garlic, clove oil, even chewing on onion slices. And hey, maybe there’s some relief there. But nothing really gets to the root of the problem (literally) like professional care.

That said, salt water is still one of the best things you can do while you wait for that appointment. It's cheap, safe, and easy — just don't expect miracles.

Final thoughts: use salt water smart, not blindly

Look, I love natural remedies. I’ll try herbal teas and warm compresses all day if it means avoiding a trip to the clinic. But when it comes to a tooth infection, salt water is just support — not the solution.

So yes, use it. Rinse gently. Get some relief. But if your pain is serious? Call the dentist. Don’t be like me, sitting in the dark kitchen at 2am with a swollen face and a cup of warm salt water.

Your mouth deserves better.
