Is INFJ a or t more rare?

Is INFJ a or t more rare?

Is INFJ-A or INFJ-T More Rare? The Truth You Didn't Expect

First things first: What does the “A” and “T” even mean?

Okay, let’s clear the air here. If you’re diving into the Myers-Briggs ocean, you probably already know INFJ is one of the rarest personality types (only around 1-2% of the population). But then you discover there’s two kinds of INFJs — the INFJ-A and INFJ-T. And suddenly your existential identity spiral goes deeper. Been there.

So what do they mean?

  • A = Assertive

  • T = Turbulent

They’re variations based on how confident or emotionally stable a person tends to be. It’s part of the extended 16Personalities model — not the OG MBTI framework, but still widely used today.

Assertive INFJs are generally more self-assured, resilient, and chill under pressure.
Turbulent INFJs are... well, more emotionally intense, perfectionistic, and prone to overthinking (yep, hi, it me ).

So which is rarer: INFJ-A or INFJ-T?

The numbers say: INFJ-A is more rare

Based on available data from 16Personalities and anecdotal surveys, INFJ-Ts outnumber INFJ-As by a significant margin. Some estimates suggest up to 70-80% of INFJs are Turbulent.

Honestly? That makes sense. INFJs are known for being sensitive, emotionally aware, always second-guessing themselves and trying to save the world while doubting their worth. That’s peak Turbulent energy.

INFJ-As, on the other hand, are like unicorns with therapist licenses. Quiet, thoughtful... but somehow secure in who they are. I’ve met maybe two in my entire life. One of them was my old professor, and he had this Jedi-master calmness that made you feel like everything would be okay, even when the projector was on fire.

Why INFJ-T seems to dominate

Let’s be real — INFJs already live in their heads more than most types. Combine that with a Turbulent nature, and you get someone who feels everything deeply, thinks about it even more deeply, and then questions whether they thought too much about it.

I had a convo with my friend Lina (also INFJ-T) and we were literally comparing the number of breakdowns we’d had that month. (Spoiler: I won, but only by two.)

That kind of internal storm is way more common than the serene lake that is INFJ-A.

Do INFJ-As and INFJ-Ts act that differently?

Not as much as you'd think… but still, yeah

The core traits — intuition, empathy, idealism — are there in both. But the vibe is different.

INFJ-Ts might:

  • Over-apologize constantly

  • Struggle with self-doubt

  • Be perfectionists to a fault

  • Write 500-word texts and then delete them

INFJ-As might:

  • Still care deeply, but not fall apart when criticized

  • Trust their gut decisions more

  • Say “no” without spiraling into guilt for three days

  • Sleep. Like actually get enough sleep. Imagine.

It’s subtle, but real. INFJ-Ts tend to internalize stress more, while INFJ-As are more likely to compartmentalize it.

Can an INFJ-T become an INFJ-A?

Maybe... kinda? But not overnight.

This was a question I obsessed over for a while. I even emailed the 16Personalities team once (yep, I was that person). They said these traits aren’t permanent labels — they exist on a spectrum and can shift with life experience.

So yes, you can develop more assertive traits over time.

After therapy, meditation, and about 300 journals later, I’ve felt myself leaning slightly more “A” than before. Not fully, but closer. It’s like emotional muscle memory — you can train it. But your core sensitivity doesn’t just disappear. (And honestly, would you even want it to?)

Final thoughts: Turbulent or Assertive, both are rare gems

So, to answer the burning question: INFJ-A is more rare.

But here’s the twist: being rare doesn’t mean being better. INFJ-Ts might be emotional wrecks some days, but damn — they feel deeply, they care endlessly, and they show up, even when it’s hard.

INFJ-As? Legends. But INFJ-Ts? Beautiful chaos. Both make this world kinder, deeper, and way more interesting.

So whether you’re an INFJ-A or INFJ-T, embrace it. You’re rare. You’re needed. And honestly — you’re doing better than you think.
